Operation and local history: The Genoa Livestock Ranch is located in Carson Valley, Nevada, adjacent to the Carson River and the western slope of the Sierra Nevada. The area is rich in the history of the western migration: Kit Carson’s trail through the Sierra, the first permanent Nevada settlement in Genoa (1851), the Overland Emigrant Trail and Snowshoe Thompson’s departure point for his exploits through the Sierra – all took place within a few miles of the ranch. The land was originally homesteaded in 1858 in what was then Utah Territory. In 1898, 4000 acres of the original claim were purchased by the Marquart family. Three generations of Marquarts and Settelmeyers worked to build the largest family operated dairy business in Western Nevada. In 2005, the remaining 1,040 acres of the property were acquired by Robert and Carol Coker as the site for Genoa Livestock, a family-owned purebred Hereford seed stock operation. Since our purchase, we have completed a new ranch headquarters and breeding facility, reclaimed 300 acres of pasture and grown our mature cow herd to 215 registered Herefords – both Polled and Horned.
