Operation and local History: We are an average-sized Registered Hereford breeding operation. Our focus is on registered Hereford cattle. We run a small group of other breeds, which we use for recipients. The home ranch is in the Santa Susana mountain range. The ranch consists of very little flat ground and is comprised of steep brush covered hills among large Oak trees. In conjunction to the home ranch, we lease acreage in the Sierras where we pasture the cow and calves before and after weaning. The Gillibrand family settled in Tapo Canyon, Simi Valley California in 1889. This is where we still reside today. For generations we have ranched cattle and dry land farmed grain on the home ranch and adjacent acreage. In 2003 our pure-bred Hereford operation started with the purchase a Hereford bull at Cal Poly sold to them from the Madonna Herefords consignment. This was followed by the purchase of some female breeding stock from the Orvis family. The P W Gillibrand cattle operation is currently overseen by Brandon Theising the great great grandson Edward Clayton Gillibrand, whose love for the breed started with a 4-H show steer and led to the purchase of that first registered stock. Today’s operation relies heavily on the use of embryo transfer and artificial insemination. This has allowed us access to some of the best genetics the Hereford breed has to offer from around the country. We have built a great set of registered cattle through extensive use of embryo transfer and artificial insemination. This has allowed us to enter a very competitive group of bulls at the Cal Poly Bull Test. We sell private treaty off the ranch, in addition to a few consignment sales.
